So similar, so different, so European

The following video is produced for the company I work for. I am proud of it not only because of the high quality of the production, but also because of the message it conveys.

I am a citizen of Turkey, a candidate country to the European Union. Since the signature of the Agreement Creating An Association Between The Republic of Turkey and the European Economic Community (1963), the relations of Turkey with the EU has been a massive debate issue, starting with the question “Is Turkey European?”.

The European Commission and the Council of the European Union, at several occasions, throughout the decades, declared that “Turkey is European”, “Turkey is a part of Europe”.

This video confirms this once again.

Despite of what some people think, “Turkey is so European”.

What a lazy blogger I am…

Ok, I admit… I haven’t written a single word on my blog since a long while… But each time I attempt to draft something, I realize that it is something related to projects I am working on… And for obvious reasons, I do not want to write about my daily tasks or those projects. (I am a bid manager in the business development department of a company, you get it? ;-) )

So what shall I write about?

A topic could be based on my professional observation and an unsurprising frustration… Maybe I can write about the very famous thing. Yes, that thing. Yes, yes, yes, you are right. I will write about social media, yaaaaay. And the topic will be:

“Social Media: If you are not ready for it, just forget about it”

To start with, social media is not about having a monologue… It is about creating a dialogue. These famous social media platforms are not only for keeping your target groupz updated about your campaign’s latest news or place and timing of your in country events. It is about answering a question properly, when you receive a question from your target audience… And then, receiving another question. And answering to that too. And all of a sudden receiving a nasty comment. And responding to that comment too? Wohoooo… And let me tell you from now, you will receive that question or comment. So, are you ready to face it? Are you ready to answer with correct and relatively satisfactory information? If you do not, you will receive frustration… You will receive loss of faith in whatever the message you are trying to communicate. If you don’t have the guts for responding the questions and comments in a satisfactory manner… Well… Just forget about it.

Secondly, social media is not a fashionable t-shirt that you can wear on today and wear off tomorrow. It requires continuity (so, don’t do what I do). Will you be able allocate the necessary time and effort to it? Will you be able to feed the dialogue, day and night (if possible without the heavy EU jargon pleaseee)… Do you have the resources to keep it living? If not… Just forget about it…

Third, do you really follow what is going on internet? Will you be able to keep yourself updated about the new websites, new platforms, new trends? Will you be able to keep all these “stay connected” to each other? If not… Really… Please… Forget about it.

Finally, if you are not like the ones below… Or do not have any employee like them… My dear… Forget about it…

Some good news about Istanbul 2010, finally!

A colleague of mine went Paris last month and upon her return she sent me an email mentioning how she was amazed by a wonderful exhibition in Paris which was called “De Byzance a Istanbul”. Inauguration de l'exposition "de Byzance a (...) DR JEAN-PHILIPPE BALTEL

She also brought me a catalog of this exhibition and when we met, I had the opportunity to listen to her impressions in first hand. The exhibition was organised within the framework of “La Saison de la Turquie“.

She also told me that she heard the Eiffel Tower was illuminated in the Turkish flag colours (despite the reactions from many French citizens) in October 2009 but her friends told her that they were a bit puzzled since they didn’t understand the reason behind this illuminating activity.

Anyway, I was happy to hear such comments from this colleague in addition to what I was observing lately in the streets of Brussels. Finally, the 2010 Agency, decided to carry out some outdoor advertising in Brussels. In some areas of Brussels, you can come across billboards carrying Istanbul 2010 messages. Although, the design is not attracting the sight at first, still it is a good effort. Besides the Agency also organized the international launch of the 2010 in Brussels in the European Parliament with the participation of MEPs, Eurocrats, NGO representatives etc. According to colleagues, it was a successful launch designed for opinion leaders…

Nice efforts, although really late…

Istanbul: Who is the main target group of Capital of Culture activities?

On January 12th, the European Capital of Culture Agency has held a press conference in order to introduce the details of the official opening celebrations of Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture.  According to the information provided to the journalists during the press conference, the official opening will be organized on January 16th. I have read the article related to the press conference on the official site of the ECOC (European Capital of Culture Agency).

Quoting Yilmaz Kurt, the Secretary General of Istanbul 2010 Agency, “… We expect considerable participation from various parts of Turkey, as well as Istanbul.” (http://www.en.istanbul2010.org/HABER/GP_615885)

I would like to congratulate Mr. Secretary General for this very ambitious expectation although I am a bit puzzled. I had the impression that Istanbul was nominated the “EUROPEAN Capital of Culture” not “Turkish/Turkey’s Capital of Culture”. But I guess, since Mr. Secretary General is also aware that all the promotion activities were targeting Turkey’s citizens, foreseeing flow of foreign tourists to Istanbul wouldn’t be a rational expectation.

I really wonder whether anybody thought of measuring the impact of all these activities and more importantly whether the money spent so far has created any impact? The easiest way of measuring this impact – at least for the time being – would be a comparative analysis on average reservation rates in Istanbul hotels for 2010 compared to – for instance – previous 5 years.  Is there any increase? I suppose so.   What is the level of increase  in reservation rates compared to previous years’ trends? If you just can answer this question, you already have an idea on whether you are on the right way to achieve the objective of European Capital of Culture or whether you have to revise your strategy when you still have time!

Today,  one of the most popular caricaturist in Turkey, Selçuk Erdem wrote on his twitter that he doesn’t at all feel like living in the European Capital of Culture (http://twitter.com/selcukerdem).

I was really sad to read that.  If ECOC couldn’t convince -despite all the efforts and money spent- to passing this feeling to even the Istanbuliots,  how are are they going to succeed in convincing Europeans to visit Istanbul. Pitty…

“What we spend is your money!”

Guy Verhofstadt, Président du groupe ALDE

An interesting speech was held during the EurActiv’s anniversary (see previous post) by Guy Verhofstadt who is a Belgian politician and who was the Prime Minister of Belgium from 1999 to 2008.

The current Parliamentary Leader of the ALDE (liberal group in the European Parliament) pointed out another  important factor in communicating the EU.

He agreed with the  ”going local” approach which was mentioned as a recommendation by majority of the participants. However according to him, the national MPs were using the EU in such a negative way, nearly by putting all the blame of all the issues on this “faaaar far away”  Europe, a very positive approach should be adopted.

Verhofstadt suggested that the European citizens, especially in such an economic crisis situation, should be better informed that the financial resources of the EU was mainly their money, their taxes.

According to him, informing the citizens about this fact, would help to increase the awareness and ownership of EU related issues by the general public.

To be continued…
